Intensity and versatility, spanning orchestral and chamber settings, baroque to contemporary musical styles, undergraduate and graduate programs,..Dr. David Burt has performed and taught at the highest levels at both the Gulbenkian Orchestra and the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.
As a member of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, David worked with conductors such as Susanna Mälkki, Gustavo Dudamel, Ton Koopman, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kirill Petrenko, Lawrence Foster, Hannu Lintu, Giancarlo Guerrero, and Lorenzo Viotti. David has performed in Portugal, Spain, the United States, France, Germany, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Romania, Hungary Brazil, Malta, India, China, Thailand, and South Korea.
David has been a featured soloist with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orquestra Nacional do Porto, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and ICE Contemporary Ensemble. He has participated in numerous recordings for Telarc, EMI, Sony, Pentatone and Innova.
Dr. Burt has mentored and taught as an Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa since 1999. Students of E.S.M.L. occupy positions in orchestras, conservatories, and universities throughout Portugal and other countries. In addition to organizing masterclasses at E.S.M.L. with performers such as Michael Sachs, Paul Merkelo, Philip Smith, Martin Angerer, and Barry Perkins, Dr. Burt has led numerous trumpet ensemble appearances at conferences of the International Trumpet Guild.
David has served as a member on juries for the Prémio Jovens Músicos competition and the Reinhold Friedrich International Trumpet Competition. In addition, he is a member of the Historic Brass Society and the International Trumpet Guild. Recently Dr. Burt was selected to be a presenter at the Historic Brass Society’s 2022 Early Brass Festival and a virtual presenter for the 2023 International Trumpet Conference.
David was born in Minnesota. He completed his B.M. in trumpet performance at the University of Kansas and his M.M. (and Performer’s Certificate) at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. David earned his D.M.A. in trumpet at the University of Minnesota. His mentors include Barbara Butler, Charles Geyer, Verne Reynolds, Manny Laureano, David Baldwin and Roger Stoner.
